Sticky is located in historic and scenic Riverside, Illinois, America’s first planned community. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who also design New York City’s Central Park. Riverside is just a 20-minute train ride from Chicago’s Union Station, yet is a step back in time to 1875, when it was incorporated. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
In the past year, we’ve had the opportunity to shine a spotlight on this special place, through a video about Riverside, a new website and video for its best-known business — the award-winning Chew Chew Restaurant —, and a shop local campaign called I Got It In Riverside.

Known for its parks, winding tree-lined streets, original gas lamps, and 19th century homes, Riverside is an idyllic setting along the Des Plaines River. It’s also an American original — it was the country’s first planned suburban community.
Riverside was designed in 1869 by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, famous for designing urban parks, including Central Park in New York City, and the grounds for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. The village was incorporated in 1875.
In 1863 the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad was built heading southwest from downtown Chicago to Quincy, Illinois. This new access to transportation and commerce brought about a significant housing and construction boom in what was once farmland far from the bustle of the big city.
Major residential development came again in the 1920s and late 1930s. The village housing varies from bungalows to Victorian and early-twentieth-century mansions that attract architectural tours. Fifty-six homes and buildings in town have been designated local landmarks, including two National Historic Landmark homes designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
Today, Riverside is as scenic and patriotic as ever. Our July 4 parade is a slice of Americana right out of a storybook. It’s a community of caring residents and visitors alike, who enjoy Riverside for its nature, history, schools, biking, the arts, classic cars, and of course, great dining with friends and family.

The restaurant, by Owner and Executive Chef Scott Zimmer, is named for its original location, which was just a few yards from the Burlington train line.

OWNER/EXECUTIVE CHEF SCOTT ZIMMER
As a young teenager, Scott dreamed of opening a restaurant and he achieved this dream at age 27, with the original opening of the Chew Chew Café.
In his 30-year career, Scott has worked in every food and beverage capacity imaginable: dishwasher, line cook, bartender, server, host, DJ, dining room manager, general manager, kitchen manager, and chef.
He graduated at the top of his class in 1992 from the University of Illinois in Restaurant Management, where he also received the College’s Outstanding Junior Award while serving as President of the Hospitality Management Association.
As an industry leader and consultant, Zimmer has steered the success of many Chicago eateries with an ability to analyze food and beverage menus, service, hospitality, restaurant design, profitability, purchasing, and production.
Scott credits Danny Meyer (Union Square Café) and Judy Rodgers (Zuni Café) for heavily influencing his service and food philosophies. He manages with honor, discipline, consistency, communication, courage, wisdom, compassion, flexibility, love, humility, confidence, and a passion for work and excellence.
Scott is happily married to his wife Diane and together they are raising two young daughters — Agatha and Dagny Lu.
Sticky has created a shop local campaign called I Got It In Riverside that shows there’s a lot more to find than just history and scenery in Riverside, Illinois.
“I Got It In Riverside” features portraits of residents and business people with products from more than 40 establishments in town. Sticky also designed posters that were displayed throughout the holiday season in various businesses, and even in some vacant storefronts. Perhaps the greatest aspect of the campaign is the collaboration and cross-pollination it inspired between businesses, which displayed posters in their windows and establishments for businesses other than their own.
Known for its history, scenery, and architecture, Riverside is a joyful break from the malls and mass merchandise for the savvy shopper, too.
Riverside offers everything from stained glass products showcased at the White House from Colorsmith, educational trips around the world from Blueprint Tours, award-winning dining from the Chew Chew Restaurant, world renowned artworks from Higgins Glass Studio, fine small-batch artisanal spirits from Quincy Street Distillery, flights of craft beers and savory flatbreads from Riverside Tap Room, fine estate and contemporary jewelry at Arcade Jewelers, more than 10,000 titles from Comic Collector, lessons in mixology from the American Professional Bartender School, umpteen ways to split haircuts between Salon D’Amore and Salon Elia, the authentic taste of Argentina from Empanadus, memberships to the Frederick Law Olmsted Society, and so much more.
The numerous portraits were taken over the course of two days at Sticky. Chris Neumer of studio Twenty Seven and a Half did the portraits, with makeup and hair styling provided by Val Kozlovitzer and Regina Sneor.
