Sticky and photographer Paul Elledge are creating a portrait series of notable Chicagoans to support The Smile Train.  Featured are former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, artist Tony Fitzpatrick, chef Rick Bayless, designer Michelle Tan, UIC Professor and Freakonomics co-author Steven Levitt, the late Second City Producer Emeritus Joyce Sloane, radio host Garry Meier, jazz dance legend Joel Hall, Univision newscaster Brenda Carmona, actor and Rockit Ranch owner Billy Dec, Chicago International Film Festival Artistic Director Michael Kutza and others.

The Smile Train is an international organization that performs corrective cleft lip and palate surgery for children, most in developing countries.Since 2000 when Co-Founders Dr. Charles B. Wang and Brian Mullaney began it, The Smile Train has performed over 750,000 surgeries.  Each surgery costs just $250 and takes just 45 minutes.  100% of any donation goes toward programs, 0% to overhead.

In its communication materials, The Smile Train often features before-and-after photos of the children.  The transformation in their faces and smiles following surgery is remarkable and inspiring.  The “after” photos in our before-and-after portraits show the great feeling donors receive when they save a child’s life. Special composited lenticular prints will “reveal” their smile to viewers at an upcoming gallery show fundraiser, date and place TBD.

We hope our show will be a precedent for similar efforts in New York, London and other cities.
